Assigning License Entitlements to Groups
There are two ways you can do this, both described here.
To assign license entitlements to groups:
-
Check whether your target group is already displayed in the list of
Enterprise groups listed in the tab.
It may be present because group members are already consuming entitlements under this license, or are linked to purchase order lines relating to this license; or because these conditions apply in a descendent group, affecting the rolled-up totals for this group.
If the list of groups is long, use sorting and filtering in the table to help you find your target group.
If your target group is not already in the list:
-
Optionally enter a few characters from the group name in the
Search for groupType to
add field; and click Search.
A fly-down appears, and displays enterprise groups of the type currently displayed in the Assign license entitlement to group type drop-down list. If you left the Search field blank to list all groups of this type, the groups are shown as a hierarchy with expander + icons on the left. If you searched for a particular group of letters, all the group names containing those characters are displayed, but in a flat list. If you need to clear up ambiguity in individual group names, use the column chooser in the search pane to add the Path column to the search list. For each group in the list, this displays the antecedent groups (parents) from level 1 down to the group.Tip: When you are working with locations, and only when FlexNet Manager Suite is the source of truth for IBM PVU sub-capacity consumption calculations, the Search fly-down includes an extra column for IBM region. This may help you select the appropriate location(s), since IBM regions are mapped through locations and affect the calculation of peak points consumption; and the peak points consumption over a reporting period determines your liability on an IBM PVU license. However, since the IBM region value has no bearing on enterprise group assignments, this column is not displayed in the listing of selected groups (below the search fly-down).
-
If necessary, expand the items in the fly-down list until you can
select your target group(s).
You can select multiple rows with their check boxes on the left, with each group considered individually (that is, a selection does not include descendent groups, which can be selected separately). You can also make selections across multiple pages of the search. (If you happen to select group(s) that are already in your list, these selections have no new effect on the finished list.)
-
Click Add groupType in the
panel.
The search pane closes, and the selected groups are added to your list of Enterprise groups.
-
Optionally enter a few characters from the group name in the
Search for groupType to
add field; and click Search.
-
Optionally, you may directly edit the values shown for any
group(s) in the Modify
assignment column.
When you re-enter this tab of the license properties, the value in this column for each enterprise group matches the first number in the Assigned locally (total) column: it is the local assignment of license entitlements to this enterprise group. However, you can click any value in this column, and edit it directly in the table. Click outside the same field to complete the process. After a moment, the values in all affected rows are updated.
While this may seem fast, it does not allow for audit-trail comments nor for ensuring balanced quantities in inter-group transfers. If you use this short-cut, remember to click Save and you're done. -
Otherwise, select a group from the list, and click Assign
entitlements.
This button is enabled only when exactly one group is selected. It must not be the Unassigned group.A blue editing panel, Assign license entitlements to groupPath, appears.
-
In the Assignment method drop-down list, select
Create new assignments.
An additional field is exposed.
-
In the Additional assignments field, enter or spin-up
the number of assignments to add to the selected group.
The maximum for each assignment is 1 million. There is no check on whether the license has sufficient entitlements already purchased to cover the group assignment you are now making. This is because group assignments do not automatically count as consumption (you may be assigning for future growth), and you may be in the process of working out how many additional purchases your enterprise needs to cover a whole range of assignments you are making.
- Optionally, enter a comment in the Notes field to explain this assignment in the light of an audit in the distant future, when memory has faded.
-
Click Update.
After a moment, the list is refreshed with the new value, and resulting changes to affected rolled-up totals, as well as to the (multi-page) total of all assignments shown at the bottom of each page of the Enterprise groups list.
- You may continue making assignments to as many groups (of the same type) as you wish. When you are satisfied, click Save.
