Targeted IBM PVU Virtualization Scanning

FlexNet Manager Suite version 2019 R2
Frequent hardware scanning for IBM PVU license calculations on VMware vCenter or Oracle VM Manager (OVM) servers can be restricted to only collect inventory from one or more user-defined targets, or it can collect inventory from all known VMware vCenter or Oracle VM Manager servers. These changes deliver significant improvements to inventory scanning times by limiting the scanned targets and removing unnecessary repetition of discovery. This feature includes:
  • The Collect inventory from VMware vCenter or Oracle VM Manager servers replaces the Perform remote scans against all known VMware vCenter and Oracle VM Manager servers check box. If this option is already enabled in your FlexNet Manager Suite implementation, the new Known vCenter or OVM Manager servers target is automatically selected after upgrade, and you will reap the associated performance benefits.
  • The Collect inventory from VMware vCenter or Oracle VM Manager servers option reduces scanning times (compared with the previous implementation) by not repeating discovery of new management servers. This means that you must ensure discovery of all relevant servers before the target becomes effective.
  • You may also choose to reduce scanning by creating your own custom target(s) to identify vCenter or OVM Manager servers that you know are managing VMs that should consume from IBM PVU licenses. While this enables you limit scanning to only the inventory that is relevant to IBM PVU licenses, you must remember to update your targets any time that VMs consuming from IBM PVU licenses are managed by a new virtualization manager outside your targets.

  • All drop-down lists in the IBM PVU scanning section are populated with the default targets and any existing custom targets when frequent hardware scanning is selected.
