Role Based Scenarios

App Portal 2020 R1

You can get very creative using role based task management and the scenarios mentioned in this section are just a few of the many ways to use them.

The following table lists some role-based scenarios applied to various deployment types.

Role-Based Scenarios

Scenario

Description

Scenario #1

OS and Application Deployment

A role has three application packages assigned to it and the role is assigned to a Windows 7 OS deployment task sequence package catalog item in App Portal.

The applications assigned to the role will be applied as part of the OS deployment.

Scenario #2

Application Deployment Only – Assigned Direct

A role has three application packages assigned to it.

That role is then assigned to a generic task-sequence-based catalog item and will apply those applications to the system.

Scenario #3

Application Deployment Only –Assigned by Condition

A role has three application packages assigned to it.

That role is assigned to a task-sequence-based catalog item, but only applies if a condition is met such as the user is a member of a certain AD OU.

Scenario #4

Profile Migration

A role is configured for profile migration with USMT.

You can configure a role to migrate user profiles with USMT by intelligently detecting the user details to migrate based on role conditions.

Scenario #5

Two-Step System Migration

Step 1: Deploy OS First

Role 1 applies computer variables as part of OS imaging deployment and is deployed first.

Step 2: Migrate User Applications Second

Role 2 migrates a user’s applications, and installs a role-based set of department applications to the system.

This is a very handy scenario in large enterprise sites, where they may purchase hundreds of new computers at a time.

Step 1—The systems go to a depot where they are pre-built and have the company image deployed to them.
Step 2—Next, a system is allocated to a user at a location and delivered with a base build. The user logs in and visits App Portal and requests to be provisioned.
Step 3—The user’s prior software applications and department applications (role based), plus their profiles get provisioned and migrated to their new system.

Scenario #6

OS Deployment, Application Deployment and User Profile Migration All in One

You have flexibility to use role types and conditions in virtually any combination, as well as configure multiple roles that apply to the same user or system based on the condition configured.
