Types of OS Deployments Supported by App Portal
App Portal enables you to make OS deployments self-service instead of administrator-driven. App Portal end users can initiate an OS deployment by checking out a catalog item in the App Portal storefront. App Portal supports the following OS deployment types:
OS Deployment Type |
Description |
Deploy OS on New Computer (Bare-Metal Install) |
In this scenario, your OS corporate image is deployed for the first time to a new computer. Since this machine is new to your organization, no user data or applications need to be captured or migrated. For more information, see Deploying an OS on a New Computer. |
Upgrade OS of Existing Computer (In-Place Migration) |
In this scenario, the operating system of an existing computer in your organization is upgraded. The existing user data and applications are captured prior to the OS upgrade, and then later restored to the machine after the OS upgrade has been completed. For more information, see Upgrading the OS of an Existing Computer. |
Replace Computer (Side-by-Side Migration) |
In this scenario, user data and applications are migrated from an existing system to the replacement system, which will be imaged with the selected operating system. For more information, see Performing a Side-By-Side Migration from a Source to a Target Computer. |
In all of these scenarios, if the installation of additional applications is enabled, you also have the option of selecting additional applications to install during deployment. All software catalog items that are available for installation on the target system would be listed on the Choose Additional Applications to Install During an OS Deployment panel of the Checkout Wizard. For more information, see Global vs. Catalog Item Level Settings for Migrating or Installing New Applications During OS Deployment.
