There are cases when the purchase of software entitles the user to use other versions or editions under the same license, especially when the license is under some maintenance agreement. Maintenance Entitlements work in conjunction with Inventory Assignments to automatically create additional assignments for related Inventory Groups. This happens specifically when you relate a purchase to a user or computer where the purchase is under maintenance. Often you purchase the current version of software and when under maintenance, allow the user to use previous or later versions while the maintenance is current.
Maintenance Entitlement
In this example, when a purchase is made for Visio Pro 2010 and the purchase is under maintenance, if the purchase is related to a user, that user will automatically be entitled to use Visio Standard 2007. This assignment will happen automatically when a purchase is assigned to a user or computer.
When you view usage reports for installed software, the user will show as assigned for both Visio 2010 and Visio 2007 indicating that the installation is authorized.
