Importing from Active Directory
To reduce manual data entry and enable enhanced inventory features, your inventory beacon imports data from Active Directory (where available): domains, sites, subnets, users, and computers are all available. (To manage licenses for applications where access is controlled through group membership, such as those deployed through Citrix and App-V, IT Asset Management also imports Active Directory groups, along with details of which users are members of which groups; but the complexities of group membership are not displayed in the web interface.)
What data is imported from Active Directory?
- Sites and Subnets
- Sites: Logical groupings of IP subnets in Active
Directory that map physical locations to the network. Use of sites
allows devices to be associated with their geographic or
organizational locations.
Example: A "New York Office" site might represent all devices in the subnets assigned to that office.
- Subnets: A range of IP addresses that define the
network segment. Subnets are linked to sites to help organize
devices based on their network location.
Example: The subnet "192.168.1.0/24" might belong to the "New York Office" site.
- Sites: Logical groupings of IP subnets in Active
Directory that map physical locations to the network. Use of sites
allows devices to be associated with their geographic or
organizational locations.
- User Objects
Active Directory stores information about users, which IT Asset Management imports for accurate user-to-license mapping.
- SAMAccountName: The Security Account Manager (SAM)
Account Name is the user's unique logon name within a domain.
Example: User Krishna Sai might use the SAMAccountNam "ksai".
- SID (Security Identifier): A unique identifier assigned
to each user in Active Directory, ensuring users can be
distinguished even if their usernames change.
Example: "S-1-5-21-123456789-987654321-123456789-1001"
- Email: The email address linked to the user account in
Active Directory, used for communication and licensing
purposes.
Example: "ksai@company.com"
- SAMAccountName: The Security Account Manager (SAM)
Account Name is the user's unique logon name within a domain.
- Computer Objects
Computer objects represent devices within Active Directory.
-
Computer Name: The hostname or identifier of the
computer, typically used to uniquely identify the computer in the
network.
Example: "DESKTOP-12345"
- SID (Security Identifier): A unique identifier assigned
to a computer object to distinguish it from other devices in the
domain.
Example: "S-1-5-21-123456789-987654321-123456789-1101"
-
Computer Name: The hostname or identifier of the
computer, typically used to uniquely identify the computer in the
network.
- Groups and Group MembershipsGroups in Active Directory are collections of users, computers, or other groups that simplify resource management and license assignments.
- Groups: Logical groupings used to manage
permissions or application access.
Example: A group named "Finance_Team" might grant access to financial systems.
- Group Membership: The list of users or devices that
belong to a group.
Example: The Group Membership list of the "Finance_Team" group might include two users "ksai" and "asmith".
- Groups: Logical groupings used to manage
permissions or application access.
