Right of Second Use
The right to use the same software on a second computer (without additional license costs), subject to some restrictions. Different publishers may have different restrictions. For example:
- Most commonly, the right of second use is restricted to a single user, the primary user of the computer on which the software is first installed. (IT Asset Management enforces this restriction by requiring that the same user is registered for a second work computer that makes use of this right.)
- Frequently, the right of second use requires non-simultaneous use. (IT Asset Management does not enforce this restriction, as the timing of application use are not tracked for this purpose.)
- Some licenses allow the right of second use only on a home computer. Since there is no inventory of home computers, this use is not tracked. You can represent this right by selecting Second use at home (not tracked).
- Other licenses allow for use of the software on a second work computer, where one is a desktop computer and the other is a laptop or portable computer. For licenses of this type, select Second use on work laptop. IT Asset Management enforces this distinction by finding two computers of different types assigned to the same user. The second of these computers must be a portable computer, of a type listed in the table below, and not including any virtual machines.

This license does not have contracts with applicable rights on second use | This label indicates that this license has no linked contract attached to it that has applicable rights on second use. Rights on second use can be inherited from a contract, or specified in this section. This label appears when the contract attached to this license has no applicable rights on second use. See Contracts Tab. |
Inherited right of second use from contract |
Indicates the name of the linked contract from which this license can
inherit license consumption rules and rights. When you select this check box, you instruct
IT Asset Management to dynamically inherit license use rights and rules from an
automatically-selected linked contract. If a license is linked to multiple contracts, the
license inherits use rights and rules from one of the linked contracts based on the
following conditions:
|
No second use rights | There is no right to use a second copy of the software, and every installation will consume an entitlement. This is typically the correct choice when a shrink-wrapped copy of the software has been bought retail (or in Microsoft terminology, FPP). |
Second use on work laptop | Select when the license allows software installed on a user's desktop computer, to have a second copy installed on a portable work computer operated by the same user. Computers where the installation has been calculated as a second use will not consume a license entitlement, and will show an Exemption Reason of Second use in:
By default, the Exemption Reason column is available in the column chooser. To be eligible for the right of second use, a user must be the primary or assigned user of a computer that has one of these chassis types:
Tip: The chassis type is available in the Hardware
tab of the inventory device properties. It may be reported from inventory as the
Inventory chassis type,
or (where this is missing or incorrect) overridden as the Assigned chassis type.
Virtual machines cannot participate in this right, neither as the primary nor supplementary computer. |
Second use at home (not tracked) |
Select this option when the license allows a second installation on the home computer of the same user for whom it is installed at work. Home computers are not inventoried by enterprise management systems, and hence IT Asset Management cannot reconcile these cases of second use. This setting is provided for your convenience in recording the special conditions of this license. |
