Name
The name you give the license. Mandatory field, preferably but not necessarily unique.
Automated Defaults
- When the license is created from a license model, the default name is derived from the licensed software product (the application name, without any reference to a specific version).
- When the license is created by importing a Microsoft License Statement (MLS)
in a spreadsheet, the license name combines the
Publisher
,Product
, andEdition
values listed in the MLS record. - When the license is created while processing a purchase order line, and that
purchase order line used a recognized SKU, the
Description
from the SKU is used as the default license name. This typically includes the publisher, product name, version, license type, and language. - On the other hand, if a purchase order line does not use a recognized SKU,
the default license name is copied from the PO line
Description
.
Considerations for Naming Licenses
Consider the following points when choosing or modifying a license name:
The name should brief, but descriptive enough to differentiate this license in long lists of licenses.
If the license may include automatic upgrades and downgrades, the name might well omit any mention of version, since the attached applications will change over time.
Where there may be similar licenses, such as one for a product bought at retail and another for the same product bought under a purchasing agreement, you might include the purchase type in the license name (for example, “Microsoft Office FPP” would indicate the retail purchase of the full packaged product, and “Microsoft Office SA” could indicate the same product purchased under your Select License agreement).
